Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session was driven purely by addressing small mistakes on practice tests and reviewing two argument essays. The latter were fine on the whole; only several remarks had to be registered, all minor. There were the results of two exams. These went well on the whole. I did have to teach some basic notions applicable to standard deviation. He understood that fine."
"We covered critical reading, mostly, and went over questioning assumptions and being able to back up every answer choice you make. The student found the multiple-answer questions the hardest, but seemed to understand them more as time went on. I'm interested in seeing how she'll responded to the "select a sentence" questions."
"Today we spent the first hour drilling for the critical reading passages on the verbal section and questions about arguments (Strengthen/Weaken). We spent the second hour on the quantitative section, focusing on arithmetic."
"As this was our last session, we went over a few things the student wanted to cover specifically (work/rate problems, mixture problems) as well as some less targeted practice material. We reviewed some questions she answered incorrectly on practice sections, but most of those were due to minor procedural mistakes rather than conceptual issues. She is very comfortable with most concepts likely to be on the test and has plenty of practice tests to prep with this week."
"During this session, we did some problems involving 2-step algebra equations and functions. Most of the time was spent discussing what a functions is and, in particular, working with functions that produce straight lines. We put the equation for a line in slope-intercept form and talked about what the different components of the equation mean."
"Finishing the algebra section did take longer than anticipated. Graphing parabolas and the circle gave us the most trouble. We'll be doing geometry for our next session on Thursday. The student will read pp. 45-56, and we'll start with the exercises on p. 57."
