Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I spent most of this session talking about a reading that I asked him to look over. It is Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "Letter From the Birmingham Jail." Basically, I wanted to show him that there were three or four separate claims that King was making, and I wanted him to see the rhetorical devices King used to get his ideas across. In addition, I wanted him to find one memorable sentence that he can use as a source in a response to just about any argumentative prompt. We also talked about the Synthesis essay. We read his most recent one, and we critiqued it."
"During this meeting, the student and I continued to review the English AP exam, but focused primarily on the essays."
"Student and I discussed the essay section of the AP test and went over some techniques for writing these types of essays."
"The student and I had a great session, delving into phonics. We focused on the consonant "m" with short vowel sounds. We did a lot of practice with those sounds in words and making sentences with them. Then, we focused on words that end in "y" that sound like long e. I gave him some sentences to create and words to come up with for next time."
"The student and I practiced the phonics of the alphabet to prepare for her test. She did very well. She had a good attitude this lesson, and showed an improvement in focus and concentration."
"The student and I reviewed his homework. We worked on sight words, the sounds that make the er, ir, ur, and ear sound with a lesson on my computer. We worked on reading fluency and comprehension. He also read his "Snake" nonfiction book. He did such a good job on his book! He was focused and worked really hard the entire time. We finished up with me reading him a story from his "Star Wars" book, because he earned it!"
