Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Student has a multiple-choice practice test to prepare for, so we used a couple of question sets from an AP prep book to discuss question strategies: process of elimination, how much context to consider when answering a question, author's point of view and tone, etc. She did well on the practice tests."
"The student practiced multiple choice in the test prep book. She did well, but it came out that she was still a little shaky when it came to identifying rhetorical devices and formal rhetorical names (antithesis, periodic sentence, analogy, etc.). Next week's session we've agreed to devote entirely to those."
"The student and I spent the entirety of this session practicing the argumentative essay prompt time for the advanced placement exam, paying close attention to essay formatting strategies and brainstorming appropriate types of evidence for use in the more open-ended prompts of this type. He demonstrates proficiency at bringing in outside sources from other subjects as necessary, which will be a great help to him if such argumentative prompts appear on the exam. He has the body paragraphs and conclusion of the essay to finish writing prior to our next session. After reviewing this, we will begin devoting the majority of our remaining sessions practicing timing in essay-writing."
"I edited two short paragraphs the student had already written, working with the student to come up with ways to better phrase sentences. We used a rubric the student provided to evaluate the work and make sure it followed all guidelines for the assignment. We discussed how to improve the flow of a piece of writing, and worked on grammar and sentence consistency."
"I feel that our initial session went very well. We reviewed a few samples of the student's writing and an upcoming book report. She had a pretty good grasp of the central idea of her prompts. She was very attentive to the suggestions and edits I offered, and I am expecting a follow-up on her rewrites."
"I gained an initial assessment of the student's Reading Comprehension abilities through reviewing social studies materials. She was able to find the answers to questions in the text, but she struggled with explaining material in her own words. A previous reading assessment showed that she struggled with personification and theme concepts in reading, in addition to general concepts like comparing and contrasting character/plot/setting. She achieved a perfect score on her most recent reading assessment. We discussed her approach to reading the passages and answering the questions on each test. We will continue to work on any areas of confusion we identified in future sessions."
