Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, we worked on the student's practice issue essay prepared for the session. On the whole, he did a good job with this. He had some small grammatical issues and also some general "looseness" in his argument. However, these can be addressed easily. I assigned for him to redo certain sections of the essay. He also is to do an argument essay for me. (We discussed these some time back, so the procedure has some antecedent in our tutoring already.) We also spent some time going over vocabulary sentences that he wrote, and then we did extensive vocabulary work-based on root words and meaning clusters. He is to do at least 40 sentence equivalence questions as well as a long list of sentences based on new words."
"We started out with reading questions, then moved on to vocabulary questions. We finished up with math. The student had a great attitude; she was very positive and attentive. I am going to send her some practice problems to work on over the weekend. I think (and I believe she agrees) that learning more vocabulary words and practicing math problems to improve her speed are the two biggest things she can do to improve her scores. We went over a few strategies, including eliminating incorrect answers, looking for context clues, looking for clues within a word to determine its meaning, finding an alternate and faster way to do a math problem, and taking the first step in a math problem (e.g., factoring) even when the rest of the process is not apparent."
"Today we discussed the structure of the test and practiced the FROZEN strategy for quantitative comparisons and the strategy of picking values for problem solving questions with variables. I left extra quantitative practice."
