Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I started this session by going over her second sample essay. In this second writing sample she showed more care in organizing her examples; still, a few issues came up that merited discussion. Specifically, the role & correct use of commas; the value of specific language and clear referents for pronouns (i.e. "his extended family" instead of "they" when the people "they" refers to haven't yet been mentioned); and the careful matching of the essay's focus to the specific focus of the prompt, rather than a closely related but slightly different question. After talking through some ways to address these issues, we took a break from the writing section to review and expand on the strategies we had gone over for working more efficiently through the reading section during our first couple of sessions. In particular, we reviewed the usefulness of reading the questions before the passages, and explored the strategy of moving between the passage and the questions whenever she has enough information from the passage to answer one of the specifics-based questions."
"We finished intermediate algebra and covered coordinate and plane geometry. I assigned a timed math section for homework."
"Review of test taking strategies; score increased by 100 points since we started; setting another 100 point goal by next week."
