Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was the first session with this student. We looked at her DAT resources, her study plan, some general strategies for the sections she wants to work most on, and started working with practice problems. We focused on the QR section. She says she is most concerned with geometry and trig, since it's been the longest since she's learned and used those subject areas. We used a review book to look at the fundamentals of geometry (area of circles, triangles, triangle types, definitions, etc.), and I showed her a comprehensive list of the formulas she will need to familiarize herself with and how to apply them."
"We covered the questions that the student had difficulty with in the first review book, and then moved on to the practice questions in the second review book. She is doing well, and just needs to focus on doing practice problems every couple of days. We were able to reinforce some skills from our first lesson."
"We finished going over the diagnostic test and went over permutations/combinations, probability, factorials, and exponent rules. We started going through a geometry practice test since the student was still having a hard time with area/volume questions. He will review those formulas to make setting up the equations easier."
"We focused entirely on algebra-related questions, both the purely math ones and the ones with short descriptions. The student sometimes had problems with figuring out how to set up some of the more difficult questions, but was making progress on this, and her basic math skills seemed strong and only slightly rusty. She had a very positive and can-do attitude, which is very helpful when studying for a big test like the GRE. We talked about the value of repetition and going over as many math questions as possible to improve fluency. I suggested getting as many math GRE books as possible and just going through the questions as long as she could stand. I think she set up most of the questions quite well, and just made a few math mistakes, the kind of which will straighten out with some more practice."
"We went over the DAT general chemistry book, specifically chapter 6 of gas laws and chapter 7 of thermodynamics. We made a study guide together that incorporated major ideas and main concepts as well as sample problems. I gave the student homework to be completed for this upcoming Thursday. She is progressing well according to my expectations."
"We went over the practice chemistry problems that the student completed after our last session and identified issues that she was having with certain types of problems. We also looked at a math practice test that she had done and saw where her mistakes were. Many times, she rushes a little through some of the problems and tries to do calculations in her head. This sometimes leads to switching around factors in problems or simple math errors, even though she knows the concepts. She is going to work on slowing down and writing out equations to make sure that she doesn't mix things up in her head. She will do more practice problems in all of the sections for the DAT before our next session, and we will go over the answers. I will also look for additional DAT practice problems that she can use to review that section."
