Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began today's session by reviewing the geometry homework. Overall, the student performed well, but we agreed that she should practice more with triangles. She knew how to set up the problems, but made small errors when completing them. In terms of new content, we introduced statistics, including the standard distribution, median, mean, mode, and range. She performed well with problems involving means. However, we noticed that she needed some more practice with converting from word problems to math. Thus, we tried some practice problems involving word problems and percentages. We also discussed scenarios in which it might be better to plug in the answer choices as opposed to setting up an equation. Homework will include geometry review, stat review, and comprehensive math review."
"We covered the easy to intermediate questions in the official study guide to the GRE, and started on the hard questions. The student has a good grasp of the material, but just needs practice to see all the different ways they can ask the material. Reasoning will have to be practiced, as well as all the various tricks that the GRE test makers use."
"We covered various math problems mostly geometry. The student did quite well with most of the math. I suggested she practice working on math in longer periods to get more used to doing math when under mental fatigue. Overall I think she continues to make improvement. Her algebra was much sharper than before."
"We did a lot of work on data analysis. One focus was interpreting tables and graphs, where converting averages into totals was emphasized. This also related to weighted means. The formula for summing a series was shown. For converting percentiles or standard deviations to units, a two-sided number line was used."
"We did practice problems having to do with number properties, fractions/decimals/percentages, ratios and proportions, lines and angles, linear equations, quadratic equations, and combinations/permutations."
"We discussed the student's goals and overall strategy for preparing for the GRE. We also started on a new practice test together. I'm sure she will have plenty of practice problems completed for us to review the next time we meet!"
