Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We discussed the student's approach to the SAT thus far, when she'll be taking it, how she feels about it, expectations, etc. We then looked at the score report and translated it into SAT terms, and discussed overview of entire test such as breakdown of sections, scoring, and skipping. Lastly we began to learn strategies for sentence completion questions and number and operations in the math section. I really enjoyed working with her and look forward to seeing her Sunday! She has a great attitude and I can foresee getting much accomplished each meeting."
"For homework I had the girls complete a practice English test. We went over the answers they got wrong together, and then began preparing for the reading test. The girls and I discussed the basics of the reading test as well as strategies. We practiced pacing and read passages while timing ourselves to keep our reading time to three minutes or less. We began a practice section together and I had them finish it for homework."
"With the student today, we worked on the Writing section of the SAT. I discussed the essay briefly with her, and assigned her to write one or two short essays for us to go over in our next session. We also went through the grammar rules that will be tested, and then she did sections of practice tests on her own and we went through them."
"Today, the student and I focused on math. For the first half of our session, we did about 15 problems from a practice test. While she did not always get the answers right, when I had her explain them to me, she was able to quickly identify the correct answer. We will continue working on confidence in test-taking and double-checking our work. For the second half of our session, we practiced more multiplication. We did three practice tests, and on her last one, she got them all right in under 2 minutes. We will continue practicing, focusing on improving her accuracy and times with multiplication facts."
"Three math homework problems, PSAT writing and PSAT critical reading were covered during this session. We identified areas of weakness, reiterated good test strategies and summarized and analyzed reading passages."
"The student and I focused on the ACT this week particularly working on math. He did several practice problems, and we went over concepts he didn't know yet. We also worked on his speed. He is supposed to do more practices this week so we have more to work on when we meet again."
"The first session with the student was focused on the physical sciences section of the MCAT. We went through several questions to understand the underlying concepts regarding the fundamental Newtonian laws of motion, and kinematics. At the end of the session, she understood the concepts and was able to apply them. With the additional homework that she will be working on, she will be reinforcing those concepts."
"This was split up over two sessions. In the first, we reviewed all of the major vocab from before break (My name is, mother, father, etc.). I then taught him how to hold a simple conversation, and I also taught him "I love you", "I know/I don't know," and "Is that okay?". We listened to a Chinese song with some of the phrases in it. In the second session, we extended the conversation by asking "how about you?", and "what is your name?" I also taught him numbers from one to ten."
"Today we reviewed a large number of concepts in preparation for her test tomorrow. We covered simplifying polynomials, exponents and logarithmic functions. We worked on the basic rules of adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing exponents. We also covered roots to exponent conversion as well as log to exponent conversions. She learns very quickly."
"Today, the student and I went over his chapter on Radioactive Chemistry. We first reviewed some basic concepts, and I clarified the differences between radiation types for him. We then did a number of practice problems - first writing and balancing equations and identifying radiation type and then half life concepts and problems. We finished the session with an overview of fission and fusion reactions."
"Today the student and I worked on understanding conic sections. At the beginning of the session, she said she had no idea what they were. We worked through homework problems and she felt much more comfortable by the end."
"The student and I reviewed integral approximation problems. Using a calculator shortcut helped tremendously. Then we reviewed physics problems involving the laws of motion. Important things emphasized were the reaction forces of friction and the direction of normal forces."
