College Essays Tutoring review by Sarah in Georgetown, TX
The student completed an assessment. She has moved from the "letter name- alphabetic" stage to the transitional "within word pattern" stage. This means she has a good grasp on short vowels, digraphs, blends, long vowels, other vowel sounds, inflected endings, syllable junctures and all consonant sounds. Additional focus will be spent on inflected endings and syllable junctures and the student and I will also talk about unaccented final syllables, suffixes, and bases and roots. She and I then completed a lesson on hard and soft "g" and "c." The student seemed to understand the concept and correctly answered many practice questions by placing examples of hard g/c and soft g/c in columns. She and I then continued reading "Charlotte's Web." The student is reading this text with about 90% accuracy and only struggles on some of the longer and more outdated words in the text. She seems encouraged by the book and is reading fluently with excellent comprehension. The student was given three questions to answer about the book in her reading journal.

During today's session the student's parent's shared her recent spelling test scores of which she scored consistently 90-100 percent. This shows her continued mastery of her 2nd grade spelling and comprehension content. I consistently remind her to slow her pace where needed and gently emphasize that, her progression is about a steady consistent pace and easy word comprehension, not memory. When told, she is great at slowing her reading pace to repeat and correct herself. When reviewing flashcards, she will often ask how many she has left to read, which shows she understands that a steady pace in reading is important and shows her ongoing progress. We will soon combine 3rd grade reading materials with her current 2nd grade readings so she is further challenged and has a balance of older and more advanced reading passages, phonics and word/content comprehension. I consistently applaud her steady progression, curiosity about word meanings, and her eagerness to progress in all areas.

Today I read 12 pages of "Stink..." to the student and then asked him 5 W questions, which he easily recalled. The student struggled a little with the vocabulary words from his dictation sentences, but was able to understand once explained. He is a fast learner, an engaged and cooperative student, who takes pride in his work.

We reviewed previous concepts. We went over the words he has had problems with, which he much improved. We also went over worksheets on words with long vowel sounds. We have been reading a chapter book, and he is doing very well with that. He is realizing he does not need to read picture books anymore. We will be working on vowel team sounds with flashcards, continue reading the chapter book, and working on words like coming (words with -ing). I will be bringing more practice examples and worksheets to help introduce him more to this.

He read more pages than usual. I observed him using specific techniques, including breaking the word into syllables to sound it out, and using a mnemonic to remember the sound of the letter q. As a reward for his efforts today, I gave him a progress chart that I had previously prepared and let him put down a sticker for attitude and one for every 10 pages read. He responded quite positively to this.

College Essays Tutoring review by Martina-Alexandra in Georgetown, TX
The student and I worked on her essay on The Iliad. She indicated to me before our session that she was worried if she was responding to the prompt correctly and emailed me the prompt before hand. Together, we went over it and realized her current draft did not respond directly to the prompt. However, she already had the beginnings of an awesome thesis in her first draft and we were able to use that to propel us forward by drafting a new thesis and searching for evidence in the text. She created her outline and I encouraged her to insert quotes she might use into the outline to make it easier to remember once she starts writing the first draft. I also told her about the what, how, why rule of writing theses and told her to focus on the what and how in the first draft and we agreed we could search for they why together in our next session. I'm really happy I could help her revamp her essay! She was so open to my advice and was able to work in textual evidence to support her thesis very well.
