Session Summaries by College Essays Tutors

College Essays Tutoring review by Brendan in Framingham, MA
We read two books at a Level 24. The student's fluency while reading the first book was much improved since our last session. She made on average one error per page. It was shorter in length so we read a second book. I will try introducing finger-point reading next session in order to see if this improves focus and regulates speed. She is much improved on spelling. I used words from the second-grade Dolch word list and she achieved her first 5 out of 5. Prior to tonight, I had been quizzing her on first-grade words or a mix of first and second-grade.

The student and I started with phonetics. She was able to identify the correct phoneme most of the time. We worked on her spelling, and she did well, though we will aim to improve her ability to use the words in sentences. I gave her strategies for spelling the words she struggled with. She worked on an acrostic poem, and I gave her a strategy for organizing her ideas. Finally, we ended with a game that allowed her to work on her reaction time and speed. I am seeing progress in the student.

We also worked on answering some news article questions. This helped provide an opportunity for me to review test taking strategies. I suggested skimming over the questions first, to provide the student with a focus for what to look for as she reads. This doesn't mean that she should skim the article when she comes across the information that answers the question, she can think, "this sounds familiar to a question." I also talked to the student about the strategy process of elimination. This meant, crossing out choices on multiple choice answers that are for sure not correct. Then she can narrow her choices. We finished the session by talking about writing she's currently doing. She's writing about a komodo dragon in school. In order to reinforce the writing done at school, we'll write about her chosen topic, the bearded dragon. We broke the topic in to categories (main idea paragraphs): habitat, physical appearance, babies, and fun facts. She wanted to put babies with physical appearance. I recommend keeping theme separate to focus on how a mother takes care of the babies. The student said she would do some research and write down some facts she learned for the various categories. Some information can also be from her background knowledge. We'll do researching together next week. We may use notes and put them on pieces of paper for each subtopic. Then afterwards, she can use the information to put it together.

The student and I reviewed for her final test of her 2nd grade year. We spent a few minutes going over her spelling list for the week which she had just received. We read from her book Stink: the Incredible Shrinking Kid. She did well with reading the book out loud and was able to answer questions after reading about the character's feelings and intentions, the story line, etc.

The student and I reviewed a draft of a personal statement he'd written for one application. We then looked at the prompts for several more essays he will draft and submit for college applications. After reading through the questions, assessing what each question was asking and whether he had a response in mind, we chose the prompts he would be responding to in the next few days. We then devised a plan to meet again after he'd written these rough drafts to look them over and discuss improvements.
