The student read the first chapter in Flat Stanley and did really well. It is a reading level 2.8. He also completed an activity from a workbook. We reviewed all of his sight words and he was improved tremendously from when we started. He was really happy to see how many words he knew.

On Tuesday, the boys started on a packet that they need to complete by the start of school. We went over the section on commonly misspelled words and by the end, they had mastered nearly all of them. We also discussed their definitions, which they will find in a dictionary and write in the packet. We ended the session by talking about prepositions and the difference between "time" prepositions and "physical" prepositions.

Today the student read an article about Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, then wrote a short paragraph comparing and contrasting them. This went fairly normally, though I noticed that the student often struggles to sound out words and also spells things incorrectly (though I guess that a portion of this is probably due to him trying to hurry). I would like to work on these next time, as otherwise his language arts are going well.

We worked on several writing projects. The student wrote a short story, from 4 random words as his starting point. Then he worked on writing a story that was completely dialogue. We took a short break since it was a 2 hour session. Then we spent some time editing his 2 stories. We finished up with 2 chapters from his book.

One of the AP English Language tasks for the student is to find a recent article on language and to write a two-page essay summarizing the article and setting out his own perspective on the topic. With my encouragement and some suggestions he found a NY Times blog about the effects (usually humorous) of auto-correct in smartphone messaging and texting. We read the blog together ensuring that he understood words with which he was not already familiar, such as 'gaffe' and 'risque.' Then we adopted a Socratic approach to the essay he will write, identifying his thoughts about the topic, completing a summary of the essay, and sketching out an introduction. It has been a very satisfactory week in which I have come to understand what he needs and to help him find it. We resume on Monday. In the meantime he will complete the essay and send it to me by email and I shall talk him through my responses in our forthcoming session.

During our session we read the reading passage "Leafy Forests." We worked on reading strategies and comprehension questions. I also brought a book the student was really interested in, Ripley's Believe It or Not. We covered vocabulary words, punctuation, and writing letters the correct way. Today went well.
