Tutoring review by Christian in Caledonia, WI
The student and I reviewed his work for the week. He had not filled out his digital schedule, but was able to remember the week in school. We talked in depth about how to read and annotate books, specifically Shakespeare. We covered the purpose of annotation, what to annotate, and expectations for reading and annotating complex literature. He wrote a practice essay using a graphical outline about online gaming. We reviewed his writing process, and worked on linking the conclusion and introductory paragraphs using supporting elements, and concise wording using a thesaurus. We planned for his next week in school.

Tutoring review by Ari in Caledonia, WI
In this lesson, we went over related rates problems. I outlined the general procedure, and then we jumped into example problems because it's easier to understand what's going on when working through a concrete example. Related rates are tricky and take a long time to really understand what's going on. The student was beginning to get used to the procedure and got the hang of the more straightforward problems. She will continue practicing on her own and be prepared with questions for our next session.

Tutoring review by Julia in Caledonia, WI
Studying the social studies curriculum this morning, the topic is still the USA during the 1920's. The student completed Unit 7 Lessons 6 and 7 scoring 100% on both quizzes with open book. Then he started working on a short project: write a "newspaper" about the 1920's. Lesson 6 was about athletes and the rise of organized sports. People at this time had more money and leisure time; they could see games at parks or listen at home on the radio. Many people took up sports themselves, with both men and women playing golf, for example. The lesson showed the baseball player Babe Ruth was a new kind of national hero. He learned that African Americans and women also had their own baseball leagues and that these athletes were very skilled. Lesson 7 explained further about innovators in music and science. He knew who Louis Armstrong is and considered the term "improvisation." Then he learned about Edwin Hubble. Hubble spent long, cold nights in the Mount Wilson Observatory taking pictures of starlight, turning the 100-inch mirror manually. He is the first to realize that ours is not the only galaxy and that the universe is expanding. Lesson 8 is the newspaper project which will be completed next time. He showed a lot of enthusiasm and interest in the topics because the textbook is well-written, and we also employed the Internet to enrich the lesson.

I worked with the student on some practice AP exam problems, with emphasis on working with parametric functions, integration techniques, and applications of integration. Overall, she has a very good understanding of these problems and how to work them.

Tutoring review by Ronald in Caledonia, WI
The student and I first worked on studying for his make-up chemistry test on thermodynamics. Since our last meeting, he went on vacation, so I wanted to make sure the long weekend didn't affect his ability to answer practice test questions. He was a bit slow at first, then quickly regained his confidence and accurately answered questions from the book. Once I felt he was ready for the test, we moved on to studying his review packet for geometry. I suggested that he write down all the equations on a single sheet so that he has reference material to study from. Overall a very productive session.

Tutoring review by Andrea in Caledonia, WI
The student is working on summary writing in school. We read through a nonfiction article, worked on combining simple sentences to make more complex ones and decided what the main ideas and supporting details of the article were. We also read a fiction excerpt and filled in a 'summary kite' where he took notes on the setting, characters, problem, and solution. He had to use his notes to verbally give a summary of the story.
