College Essays Tutoring review by Michael in Bartlett, TN
For today's session I again worked with the student on logical reasoning for writing essays. For his homework, he had taken 3 SAT essay prompts and attempted to outline an argument for each. While he did have a solid thesis for each prompt, he had not come up with sufficient reasoning to support his thesis in each case. So we worked on developing these ideas, and he was able to come up with at least one solid reason for each of the prompts. For homework, I asked that he outline three more SAT essay prompts, and I reiterated what that needs to include. Additionally he will pick an editorial from a newspaper and make an outline for it that identifies the thesis, counter-arguments, and the reasoning that the opinion piece employs.

The student and I discussed her book of choice, The Great Gatsby. We discussed the plot overall, and created an outline. This involved delving into her ideas, and discussing how it could be used in her essay. Her thesis centers around how F. Scott Fitzgerald is making a statement about the American Dream through the romance of Gatsby and Daisy. The student and I found three quotes to support her argument. She has started to write the paper and should have a full draft done before our next session, so that we may edit it, and push her thoughts forward.

The student and I covered the differences between persuasive and expository writing. We reviewed her previous writing prompt and graphic organizer and talked about how to use her time effectively. She really enjoys creative writing and we are working towards maintaining her voice in other types of writing. I have given her another prompt as well as a news article to read that will help influence her expository writing.

Student 1: Concepts covered: I worked with the student on a worksheet from school, which covered run on sentences and identifying character traits. We ar trying to relate character experiences to his own life to show authenticity and roundness of characters. As always, he had a positive attitude. He tried his best, and is starting to develop confidence. He will have read chapter three of "Charlotte's Web" by Monday. Student 2: We covered the consonant blend "bl" and sounding out new words. He is good with consonant blends, and could sound out words in parts. We will work on building his vocabulary. He was really having fun learning these new words.
