Clay, NY Trigonometry tutoring
This was my first time meeting with the student, so we got to know each other a little and he told me how he usually proceeded with his work. He is a hard worker and could stay on task for most of the hour. He doesn't love to write out his steps, which is fine on one hand, but I hope he doesn't associate this with weak understanding. We began reviewing with the beginning of chapter 7- working with ratios and fractions. Ratios and cross multiplying were solid. Working with ratios in equations was also pretty good. The fractional coefficients were a little less strong, but he was recalling things. He has homework: Even numbers 6-24 on pp. 299-300. Also, one word problem. He was weaker setting up the word problems, so I will keep working with him on those. The math is there, but applying to problems lags a tad.

I helped the student study for her test on linear systems. We went over the substitution method (which requires one isolated variable), the elimination method (which requires that the variables be lined up before adding), and the graphing method (which requires that "y" be isolated for both equations). The most important thing for her to remember is that the y-intercept goes on the vertical line, and it is important to add/ subtract and then divide numbers in order to get the variables on the right side. She did very well with the material and I think she is adequately prepared for her exam!

We covered the quadratic formula and discriminants. She had a worksheet on both and we just worked through the questions. She did really well, by the end she was able to solve the equations without looking at the formulas which is great! She was receptive and seemed to understand all the material.

Today the student and I went over percentages, inequalities, and conversions. She did really well with the conversions and graphing inequalities. She needed a little help with solving inequalities before graphing but picked this up after a few practice problems. We finished by working on percentages, costs and cost deficits. This is what the student struggled with most. She is able to set up problems but has some trouble solving them. I would like to go over this again with her. The student's attitude was great and gets better each week. I was even able to squeeze a laugh or two out of her.

In tonight's session we spent some time working through geometry problems (volume and surface area of geometric solids), and the remainder of the time doing chemistry in preparation for the student's final exam. She provided a worksheet with example problems.

Today the student forgot to bring his math homework home with him and he was also a little stressed about homework from other subjects piling up, so we worked primarily on his science homework and a little on his social studies project. We also started to compile a list of what we will need to review for his final exam in math. Next week we will begin by reviewing data analysis and graphs as well as solving expressions that contain variables.
