Clay, NY Statistics tutoring
The student and I reviewed last week's concept check problems. We discussed strategies to help methodically calculate area of shapes in a net figure and emphasized importance of unit labels and checking work. She completed chapter 8 homework due tomorrow on mean, median, mode, and range. We discussed shortcuts on identifying median on a number plot and reviewed how to determine mode when all data points are unique (none), and when there a multiple frequently occurring data values (multiple).

We reviewed the same thing that we went over last time: radical equations and how to solve them. We finished the review sheet and problems that the teacher had given the student, and I found some other problems online for us to work with. She seemed very confident with the concept, and needed very little help with the problems. I went over the strategy to taking her tests, since she seems to struggle with assessments because of nerves. I said to start with easier questions to knock out of the way before working on the harder questions. I also told her to circle questions she wasn't too sure of, so she knows which ones to go back to when she goes to check her answers.

The student wanted to review surface area problems for her final on Friday. Initially, she didn't remember how to divide figures up into regular shapes (i.e. squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles) and then use the area formulas for each to find the total surface area. After we worked through a few practice problems, she seemed to get the idea. I also noticed that she had trouble multiplying fractions and decimals, so we reviewed these processes as well. She was attentive and cooperative throughout our time together.

The student and I continued working through his Math Final Exam Study Guide. In addition to preparing for his test, we briefly ran through his other final exams and made sure that he knew how to prepare for each and to allocate time to them to make any final adjustments.

The student is now getting ready for his next big exam on June 2nd. This test is going to be on everything from Chapter 8 in his math textbook. First, we went over area. I had him take notes and we made a list of all the different area formulas. We practiced how to calculate the area of squares, rectangles, triangles, trapezoids, circles, and more. Next, we went over what volume is and how to find the volume of different 3-dimensional figures. Then, we worked on surface area and lateral surface area. I had him take notes on their meanings and complete some practice problems. Finally, we discussed what circumference is and how to apply the formula.

Today we studied for the student's final. I was really impressed that she really remembers a lot of the stuff from the beginning of the semester. I anticipate she will do well on the exam based on this session.
