Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked over the last of the student's homework. Then, we focused on multiplication. In an effort to tap into his competitive nature, we played tic tac toe. Inside each of the boxes was the answer to a multiplication problem. She had to figure out two factors that would create the answer in order to mark the box."
"We worked through lot of different work problems in the practice book for the test. The student had a hard time determining what operation to use and when to do mental math to estimate the answer. He struggled a lot with simple operations and small numbers. I suggested to practice the multiplication tables and work some more exercises that I provided on exponents and radicals. We worked on some strategies on eliminating answers. I left lots of exercises for him to practice. He will need to do a lot more studying before the test. I will meet with him again on Wednesday. We will work through more word problems and I will bring some base operation worksheets."
"Whether he knows it or not, the student is going through the thought process and the logic behind algebra. The thinking he is doing on these difficult problems I am giving him is helping him go through the whole learning process. He is responding very well to tutoring!"
"With mathematics, we worked on drilling multiplication (warm up), and went over the formulas for area and volume of rectangles and rectangular prisms, and then I began a brief introduction into other types of prisms such as triangular prisms and cylinders. Next session, we will be moving into ratios with real world problems dealing with ratios. With reading and writing, we went through the beginning process of the writing process steps, with a grammar focus on commas. With reading comprehension, we are focusing on main idea, and being able to find the support evidence that leads the student to her conclusion about what the main idea is."
"With Student 1, we covered the cube models that represented various numbers, and we also worked on number to words and word form numbers. His attitude was good. He stayed pretty on task the whole session! With Student 2, we covered algebra 1 concepts and square roots. She was struggling most with the rules of positives and double negatives. She was really getting it by the end though. Her attitude was strongly motivated, as usual! She is great at math and really just wants to get ahead."
"With Student 1, we reviewed decimals and fractions and converting between the two as well as her online homework. With Student 2, we worked on tens, ones, thousands, and hundreds places and reviewed for her upcoming test."
