Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent the session finalizing preparations for the student's upcoming science exam. We focused on the structure of organic compounds and how they can be used to identify them. We then reviewed the functions of said compounds. These concepts didn't appear difficult for him to understand, so the issue was just retaining the material. We then reviewed reactions that occur with the compounds. This actually took more focus, and I made sure he was able to understand by illustrating the reactions so that he could see the actual process. This made it easier for him to master. We spent the rest of the session preparing for the open response questions by going over the questions on the study guide in great detail. He felt ready for the test by the end of the session."
"We started our session checking haiku for upcoming assignments. The student had received make-up work from history to help boost his grade. We spent about half the session catching up on these assignments, and then we spent the remaining time working on math topics that he was still struggling with from chapters covered before we started tutoring together. He seems much more confident in math so far, and he is optimistic about improving his grades overall. We just have to keep up the commitment and eagerness!"
"We started with a review of factoring and then we moved onto making equations from a table. After a few practice problems, we worked on substitution word problems, starting from defining the variables, setting up equations and then to actually solving the problem. The student learned the material quickly, and by the end, was able to solve examples of both concepts we covered without my help."
"We started with the student's math homework, and he managed to finish the assignment. He is beginning exponential growth/decay and seems to grasp the concept. We also quickly looked over a psychology test. We discussed the test and how he would correct it on his own. In the final few minutes, he showed me a story project he was quite proud of."
"We started working on Module 6 in algebra. This module covers polynomials, including how to find degree, leading coefficients, and common factors. We also got started reviewing basic cases of polynomial multiplication. These easy cases can all be solved using the FOIL method. We also spent some time reviewing the student's history readings from over the break."
"We started working with the quadratic formula during this session. The student started off well with the formula and how to apply it. I showed him a couple of organizational techniques that will help him keep track of what he is doing. Simplifying the square root was the most challenging part for him. We discussed how to completely simplify the expressions and how the formula can be used for any quadratic in standard form. He will have the formula written down for his test, so we are not working on memorization at this time."
