"The student, her mother, and I agreed that we would meet this morning, since the student still had off from school and would be able to focus better than she anticipates she will be able to once school starts again. Since she had been unable to work on her homework, we jumped right into learning general strategies applicable to all sections, including pacing, process of elimination, and guessing; we then applied these to some practice questions. We used pair-reading techniques, and she took notes of the main points; we also discussed in detail what we read together in TPR. We then moved onto learning about the verbal reasoning section (question types, number of questions, etc.) and applicable strategies for both sub-sections (knowing yourself re: vocab, answering every question, thinking of answers in your head before looking at the listed answers, etc.). She again took notes of the main ideas, and we discussed how she might apply each strategy in detail and using practice questions. I kept the homework as is and asked her to complete ch. 18 and its drills while adding strategies to her notes. We scheduled the next session for 1/8, after school."
"The student and I went through the problems in the last practice sections, and talked through those problems she still finds challenging. The student has shown remarkable improvement, particularly in the Verbal section, and I feel she's very prepared for her ISEE test."
"We began by starting a new practice test and going through the math sections. The student generally does well when he gets momentum and is confident enough to seek alternate methods to solve questions. We reviewed formulas such as the volume of a cylinder, and making the necessary abstraction for problems such as finding the remaining area in a square after taking out an inscribed circle. The student was decent on the quantitative comparison sections and although I pressed him to be judicious in his reasoning for making his answer choice, his intuition was pretty solid. We finished with the math achievement section, where he's making progress with getting word problems from text to paper. As we finished up, I advised him of basic test taking strategies for his ISEE, including advising him to answer the questions he could first, maintain a consistent flow, and to answer all the questions."
