Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we began with a quiz. The student showed a good knowledge of physical vs. chemical changes. We clarified those changes further and also discussed the difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures further. We went back to discuss crystallization. I brought in clearer directions of the formation of rock candy and another explanation (complete with pictures) of how crystallization typically works in a laboratory setting. We also reviewed the question of dying clothing in terms of physical or chemical changes, and discussed why it could be either answer. We went over her vocabulary list. Most importantly on that list, we discussed the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic properties. I clarified the difference between the amount of an object and the mass of an object, and we discussed the extrinsic v intrinsic properties in detail. In terms of physical v. chemical changes, I showed her a picture of a silver spoon and a tarnished spoon and explained corrosion. We reviewed the five separation techniques that she needed to know. She initially did not know sublimation, but I explained it and she understood how it worked. We discussed the difference between the law of equal proportions (mass percent) and the law of multiple proportions (mass ratios)."
"We went over her class notes regarding endothermic and exothermic reactions, types of reactions, and how to balance equations. We answered all of the questions throughout the handouts. We also went over energy changes and how to identify converting between solid, liquids and gases based on their different properties."
"We reviewed for the student's upcoming test by going through the various concepts we have been looking over throughout the month."
"The student and I worked on different reactions today. We did some comparisons with E1 and E2 reactions. We also looked at reactions with alcohols, thiols, ethers, and epoxides."
"The student and I worked on general prep for her algebra and chemistry assessment exam today. Topics that we covered included inequalities, standard vs. vertex form, the quadratic equation, piecewise equations, dimensional analysis, and substitution vs. elimination. We also covered a little chemistry, namely mole conversions. She didn't have trouble with any concept in particular, and she seemed prepared overall for any question. She had a very positive attitude and was very confident throughout the session; she was also very engaged in the work. It was a great session overall- she seems to really have accumulated a lot of knowledge throughout the past year."
"The student and I worked on his chemistry packet for summer school. We went over buffers, acid/base/salt reactions, weak and strong acids and bases, redox reactions, oxidation numbers as well as reducing and oxidizing agents, behavior of water, Boyle's Law, and Charles' Law. We also covered Gay-Lussac's Law, PV=nRT, kinetic energy and temperature, partial pressures, electrolytes, and vocabulary definitions of important words in his units."
