The student and I went over Chapter 15 for a makeup test he has coming up, covering the Reconstruction. He seemed to have retained a great deal from our previous sessions covering Reconstruction in his answers to questions I asked him based on the text.

The student continues to struggle synthesizing research into the form and format of the assignments in her current curriculum, but with guidance she is completing her studies and receiving good to excellent grades. I have been trying to employ the idea that history is a complex, but easily understood, tapestry of events. The student and I focused on his social studies/vocabulary homework and his math homework. In social studies, he read short paragraphs and answered questions based on the paragraph. He did pretty well with the reading comprehension. We also discussed the material after he read the paragraphs. We also went over GCF and LCM and he was doing well. He was excited about getting his math homework done. His enthusiasm is great! Again, his organization has greatly improved; I am very proud of his continued organization.

The student and I studied for his social studies test for over an hour tonight. It was on the same material that we studied last week, but he hasn't taken the test yet. I repeatedly quizzed him on the same material until I was confident that he had the majority of it solid. I checked over his Latin homework, which he had almost completely correct. We also reviewed his science homework, which was easy for him. I checked over the things he had done before I had come, and he had skipped three questions. He went back and completed those after I pointed them out. He also completed his English homework.

Today the student and I read Section 1 of his current Social Studies textbook unit on the Fertile Crescent. I had him take notes after every couple of paragraphs. We reviewed his notes after reading the section and talked about Mesopotamia, the first villages, the overflowing of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and the depositing of enriched silt that helped the crops grow well there. We also talked about how the rising city-states used the invention of the wheel and sail to increase traveling and bartering, which in turn increased the wealth of these city-states.
