How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

High school juniors, and some sophomores and others, take the Preliminary SAT (PSAT), also called the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). This exam is essentially a practice test for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Although generally not factored in to college admissions, the PSAT plays an important role for your student in gaining the practice necessary to improve their odds of success later on. The test may still make your child nervous. It's rare that your student may study for the PSAT alone. There are preparatory courses in most schools, but one-on-one instruction from a personal tutor may be a great way to go. If you're student is preparing for the PSAT, Varsity Tutors may assist in finding an experienced tutor in Cincinnati, OH.

With tutoring, an instructor may identify any strengths and weaknesses, targeting each lesson on the exact areas of confusion your child is facing. They're also familiar with the test. Using the relevant materials and tools used to prepare for the PSAT, a personal tutor may also teach in a way that may help your child shore up any academic difficulties prior to the exam. To get started, contact Varsity Tutors to get your child connected with PSAT tutors in Cincinnati. Your child's independent tutor may build on their own test-taking experience to calm nerves and build confidence.

We focused on the writing section of the test, especially the "spot the error" questions. I definitely thought he was doing better by the end of the session.

Cincinnati, OH PSAT tutoring
In our session we focused primarily on writing and reading, since the last few sessions have been heavily math-based. The student did extremely well in both the writing and reading section. The only questions she had difficulty with were those concerning parallel grammatical structure. I further explained this specific topic and she seemed more comfortable with it. The few math questions we did were also better for her. She is coming into her own understanding of how to approach math problems.

We reviewed a bit more math this week. The student is incredibly bright but I think he may be overconfident in this area and makes small mistakes. We reviewed vocab and will continue to focus in this area. He has 25 new words to define and 20 new flashcards to review.

Cincinnati, OH PSAT tutoring
We went over her practice PSAT test and analyzed her missed questions. After organizing it into a chart, we were able to identify her weak points and practice problems in these areas. I gave quick time saving strategies that you can utilize on the PSAT and emphasized the importance of going over all of her answers after she takes practice tests. I encouraged her to be comfortable enough to be able to explain each question forwards and backwards and to be able to solve it multiple ways. I emphasized these points not to encourage this thinking on the actual test, but rather to help increase her mathematical maturity to help her handle foreign problems in the future. We get along very well and I have high hopes for the student's PSAT score.
