Session Summaries by Pre-Calculus Tutors

Cincinnati, OH Pre-Calculus tutoring
We continued to review the study sheets that the student's teacher gave her. We focused on more limits tonight. In particular, we did limit problems containing square roots where x approaches a number. She shows an understanding of the material and she seems to be tuned in to any instruction I give her. If I ask her to repeat a problem or do a problem on her own, she usually shows that she can execute. However, there are some instances when it is apparent that she needs to do more problems on her own. In general, I think she is in good position to do well on the exam. The teacher has foreshadowed what types of problems will be on the exam. This helps in narrowing down the focus of our sessions in preparation for Wednesday.

His class moved on to conic sections specifically ellipses and hyperbolas so we spent the time doing lots of problems of finding centers, foci, radii and the latus rectum. Took a little while to get started but once we did it went well.

The student has an assessment tomorrow. Her teacher told them it will include graphing exponential functions, which the class learned long ago, so we reviewed how to do so. Most of our time was then spent going over arithmetic and geometric sequences, with accompanying sample problems. The student was doing well with these and just needs to remember the formulas and basic approaches to the problems. Finally, we very quickly reviewed the normal distribution, which the student was confident on and which may or may not appear on this assessment.

This session, the student and I started by reviewing the difference between a recursion sequence and an arithmetic sequence. We then moved on to geometric sequences. After going over how the general equation for terms in a geometric sequence differed from those in an arithmetic sequences, we worked on problems which, given a sequence of numbers, he had to derive a sequence equation. We went over his homework which involved all the sequences we had been discussing before this point before going on to proofs of mathematical induction. I explained what the teacher had gone over in class in more detail for these then went on to the equation of the sum of terms in a geometric sequence. We discussed what the different variables and coefficients meant in the equation and finished our session by doing a few problems involving this.
