The student had an exam, and we went over the study guide for the exam, as well as the chapter problems. She is ordering acids and base from strong to week and looking at Bronsted-Lowry acids, as well as Lewis Acids. She is using the Henderson-Hasselbach equation to calculate for the pH or the concentration of one of the species. She also worked about 6 homework problems.

This session was devoted to reviewing Chapter 15's terms and concepts. The student grasps many of them, like the parts of a wave (crest/trough/wavelength/etc.), but still needs to review some of them, particularly the geographic features (barrier islands, estuaries, baymouth bars, etc.). We will go over these terms again during our next session.

Todays session with the student went really well. We first focused on chemistry, where we worked on basic problems using the ideal gas law and the three sub-laws associated with it. Then we spent a little time working math, where we covered a dozen problems on solving rational functions. After just a little explaining, he was able to complete the problems that he had with little difficulty. He had a great attitude like always and seemed to enjoy our meeting. The only new study skill that I worked with him on was on how to use the ideal gas law instead of memorizing a bunch of smaller laws that aren't necessary. I think that he is starting to really understand the topic in math and is going to do very well on his exam.

The student wanted to split the session between chemistry and algebra, so we started with algebra since she had the test the next day. The test was on logs and logarithmic functions, which she seemed pretty solid on looking through her homework and quizzes. There were a couple of quizzes where she lost points on word problems dealing with exponential growth and decay, but we talked through them and she understood where she made her error. Specifically, we discussed the different parts of the base formulae for exponential growth and decay so she could related the information given in the word problems to the different variables. Besides those quiz questions, there were a few homework problems that she just wanted to check her work on. For the most part, she was pretty solid on the math and just needed a chance to talk out a few concepts, but she knew the rules and was able to apply them correctly. We moved on to chemistry and specifically moles. She had a several page worksheet to go over that dealt with dimensional analysis utilizing moles. Conceptually, she was very comfortable with moles and really benefited from just talking through her work and looking at different ways to make conversions. I showed her how I did conversions using engineering format, which she was familiar with and agreed was easier to use in terms of keeping track of units.

I helped the student prepare for a test by going through steps on how to recognize and solve different problem types. She asked many good questions and is doing fine with the material. Additional practice problems to build more confidence is all she needs at this point- her test is not until Friday.
