Cincinnati, OH Literature tutoring
The student wanted to go over a school worksheet he had gotten back, so we went over it together. It was on matching sentences with devices such as homonym, root word, simile, etc. The student seemed to know the answers for most of them, but I needed to prompt him to go the extra mile to answer all the questions asked on the sheet--basically to identify where in the sentence and how the device was used. Once he did that, he seemed to have a better understanding. He said that when he is on his own, next time, he will reference the definition sheet to make sure he fully understands each device before answering.

We finished working on the student's paper; the process took about an hour. Our final half hour was spent correcting some of his definitions for government, reviewing to make sure he understood the terms, and quizzing his knowledge.

We focused on the student's thesis paper and covered the basics that his teacher wanted him to answer. He felt much more comfortable writing his paper and was able to catch small mistakes while he read it outloud. We also worked on quotations and when and how to use them and also how to interpret the quote's meaning.

Today, the student and I covered Greek mythology, sentence diagramming and parts of speech. We went over information from her weekly study handouts, and then we worked together diagramming sentences on the dry-erase board. She seems to have a strong grasp of most major elements related to Greek mythology, although she is a bit rusty on some of the details related to thematic events (from her study guide). However she is able to easily recite the 12 major gods and their attributes, as well as the major plot points from The Odyssey. She also has an understanding of sentence diagramming, but a little extra practice would be helpful for her. In preparing for her exam, I strongly suggested to her that she look over her written answers from previous tests and writing assignments. She said that she has these items at home, and I told her that reviewing her past work is a great way to re-familiarize herself with the course materials.

Today we covered mostly English and a little biology in preparation for the student's midterm exams in those subjects tomorrow. She was struggling most with reading comprehension exercises in the ELA practice test. We went over the strategy of reading the questions before reading the passage. Her extra practice is merely to keep studying.

The student has his English exam tomorrow, so we went over his study guide for the exam. He felt confident that he knew the English terms and the details from The Odyssey and A Christmas Carol mentioned in the study guide. We worked on the two essays he would be required to write on the exam. Because he was given the prompts ahead of time, I thought it was best to almost completely write out the essays, so he could basically copy them on the exam. This will save him a lot of time on the essay portion of the exam.
