The student and I continued his vocabulary mastery program today. We spent one hour on vocabulary mastery, approaching the issue of integrating new words through live examples and contextual clues. Following this work we moved on to several short problem sets in verbal and quantitative reasoning. The students performance continues to improve, albeit somewhat more slowly than I consider ideal in some areas, i.e. sentence equivalence. Since sentence equivalence is primarily about understanding synonyms and antonyms in context, I have urged the student to increase the amount of time he spends working on mastering his vocabulary and understanding the relationships between different but similar words, e.g. roots, suffixes, prefixes, etc. I have also urged him to work somewhat on memorizing mathematical formulas, as his performance on the quantitative reasoning is very good except when it comes to employing specific methods instead of general reasoning.

The student and I worked almost exclusively on more computer-based material today. He has put an unbelievable amount of work into preparing for the GRE (both this time around and last month), and he continues to show improvement in his efficiency solving problems. The biggest difference I see is that he often sees how to solve problems immediately now, giving him more time to tackle them instead of having to try several methods until he finds the right one. Three more sessions until the test.

Today we continued our work on the quantitative reasoning section of the exam. We again practiced the strategy of plugging in numbers for quantitative comparison questions, assigning line lengths for geometry-based questions, and plugging in the answers for multiple-choice questions. We also worked on solving quadratic equations, multiple equations, and inequalities. We reviewed graphing functions. We also practiced long passage-based questions in the verbal section.

The student and I had another good session today. We began by discussing responses to Analyze an Argument writing prompts. We then continued with our math review. She is progressing well. I reminded her that, particularly with math, practice is key. She knows a lot, but the key is beginning to know when to use which pieces of information. We will continue to work on this.

We finished up on geometry (three-dimensional objects, multiple figures) before reviewing data interpretation (counting methods, descriptive statistics, data graphs, probability) before attempting sample questions in each category. This brought an end to the math overview which took up the bulk of the first six sessions. We also covered test day conditions, and essay rules in preparation of a mock exam she'll take next week.
