The student worked on researching her paper on John Nash. I reviewed what she'd found already and then we researched together online and in the library to find more information. We talked about being specific with search terms to make sure that her results fit with the kind of information that her prompt asked for. We found some good sources online, and I had her take notes from those sources. Then, I had her color-code her notes, highlighting in different colors the information that had to do with Nash's creativity and his "madness." Then, she started to brainstorm a thesis statement, taking care that it fit the prompt (and also making sure that the student fully understood the prompt). I gave her a checklist for the steps involved in drafting a paper, and an example of how to outline an essay. She did a good job today--she asked questions when she didn't understand the material, and she diligently researched the subject. In the future, we may continue to review notetaking skills so that she will always have good notes for future projects.

Today the student and I proofread his 3rd body paragraph, which he had already written. His teacher had highlighted problem areas, so we made sure to address those while also keeping an eye out for more subtle grammar and spelling errors. We also began to focus on readability, the ease with which the student can say these words when he is performing what he's written to his class. Next session he will write the conclusion and check the entire speech for readability.

Today, the student and I reviewed her assignment. We also spent time on another assignment (a scavenger hunt) in which we identified the difference between direct evidence and purpose (what/how the text was saying vs. the purpose).

In our first meeting, the student and I got to know each other a little. I obtained her mother's and her beliefs of her weaknesses in writing and quickly reviewed an essay she had previously written, pointing out some general grammatical mistakes and word choice issues. Both the student and her mother seemed concerned about her upcoming examination on Friday, so we focused on taking the fear out of "analysis" and making analyzing a passage or topic easier and more manageable. We went through an example persuasive topic, making bullet points and analyzing each point using examples and subpoints. We also discussed the details of her upcoming examination and reviewed the novel being tested, Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes." We went through several passages together, discussing the author's vocabulary/word choice and its importance to the meaning as well as understanding of how that passage could apply to the major themes of the novel. After she seemed more confident, I gave her one of two homework assignments to complete before our next session - she can either write up the persuasive essay we broke down together (including counterarguments), or she can try to take on a creative writing task. Both assignments are designed to foster an excitement and love for writing and take the onerousness out of the task. Finally, we discussed her weakness in vocabulary (which does affect her writing, as she is sometimes limited in her word choice), so I suggested that she stop to look up any words she does not know while reading and I will bring a vocabulary task for our next meeting. She will also ask her teacher for some graded assignments for me to review for our next meeting.

Since the student's paper is due next Wednesday, she worked on making sure her thesis and outline were ready for her to begin to write her paper this weekend. She had most of her research done so she began to work on her presentation and Venn diagram. Once her tools were ready she begins to write her paper. I am confident she will do well with this essay.

Today the student and I caught up on his writing assignments for his English class. He had to read an analysis of Huck Finn and write lengthy responses about the analysis piece. He and I reviewed the article, and discussed the best way to craft well-written answers to his teacher's questions. He is extremely insightful, and our work focused mainly on his sentence structure and expansion of his vocabulary.
