As the student has her Honors English final exam tomorrow, she needed assistance preparing an outline for the essay portion. Prior to our session, she'd already selected the topic of her essay, of the options given, and had started listing supporting evidence to include in her body paragraphs. We went through the outlining process, deciding what her stance/claim was, along with her rationale for said claim and her thesis statement. In addition, I had her identify quotes relevant to her supporting details from each of the four books which were to be used as references for that exam. Her exam will include a sentence composition component, as well, wherein she would need to make use of several types of sentence phrases. She had difficulty grasping two of the sentence phrases (Appositive Phrase and Absolute Phrase), so I created more easily understood definitions for each phrase type and provided greater clarity as to how one could identify each type of phrase within a sentence. At the conclusion of our session, her only outstanding tasks were to select a few more quotes for her outline and to type up the outline in a proper outlining format.

Today the student and I nearly finished the second paragraph. We finished the first one we'd started last time, then worked on the transition to the second paragraph and successfully integrated two of the three citations we have into it. I told him that if he has the time and will, he can finish the paragraph, or even do a little more, but also that it was okay if he didn't as I will see him Tuesday. I'm noticing improvement: he is learning how to integrate citations and to help the essay flow using nice transitions.

The student is a bright, eager, and engaged student. I really enjoyed meeting her this evening. We talked in depth about the student's coursework and concerns. Because she is making good grades and seems in control of her own academic progress, I think that she and I will take a long view towards improving her vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure. In our first session, we analyzed one of the student's US AP DBQs. We focused on developing a broad, but descriptive thesis, and on tightening her sentence structure. I have suggested that she read a New York Times op-ed each week and analyze its structure. It might also be a fun way for her to pick up some new vocabulary. I am really looking forward to reviewing some more of student's writing and on beginning next week with grammar rules and vocabulary roots.

Today we reviewed a packet of essay questions given him by his Global History teacher on the Russian Revolutions of 1905 and 1917. We read both his text and my review text, and I guided him as he crafted written answers of paragraph length to these questions. His writing is improving with his interest level in the content. We also discussed his presentation on Huck Finn, which he thinks went very well.

Collected assignment from last week. Will return to student at next session with written comments. We went over "literary terms" and "ways of reading." Did a series of exercises: we read 4 short essays (sometimes aloud). Then we re-read for different things: 1. info/facts, 2. form/organization, 3. rhetorical skill. Gave assignment for next wk: the student is to compare/contrast 2 speeches (Lincoln and BT Washington). Write an essay about the 2 speeches. Went over some preliminary Shakespeare: bio, types of work, etc. The student to read Sonnet 73 for next wk. and be prepared to discuss it.

The student and I went over his essay, comparing Siddhartha and Benjamin from "The Graduate," that is due tomorrow. His idea development continues to be impressive, though he struggles with wording--specifically transition words after verbs. Examples include "judged from" instead of "judged by" and "convinced on" instead of "convinced to." I'm planning to bring some specific work for this type of grammar problem next week.
