Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed and marked up the student's paper, which she had emailed me prior to our session and I had marked up electronically before going on-site."
"Finished algebra homework, created rough outline for feature article, planned research, and planned content of article."
"The student's parents requested to meet in person in order to discuss his current struggles with college coursework, and more specifically his Speech 101 class, which he is now taking as an audit course to fulfill an incomplete from last quarter. His parents are concerned about his lack of focus to complete projects/assignments and how this is influencing his grades and significantly impeding the completion of a college degree. He is a very intelligent student and a considerably strong communicator (written and verbal) with particular interest in history, political science, and anthropology. His main struggle is with organization, time management, and positive focus. We reviewed strategies for introducing my assistance to him in order to properly frame tutoring as more of an incentive-based benefit than a demand or expectation. We will also sell my assistance as more of a supportive, motivational coach/mentor role than a task-mastering, critical instructor role. Finally, we looked at his current Speech 101 project in order to prepare me for assisting him with the full completion of this assignment in one sitting. Time is critical here, as the quarter is coming to a close, and he must turn around this incomplete. With three major projects due in a short time, we will have multiple-hour project sessions to get him toward the goal of excellent-level course completion. The first session was set for Saturday in their family home."
"Today, the student and I discussed his progress with the interviews he had next week and planned next steps. We talked about best practices in communicating with employers and researched other potential opportunities. We also finished the first draft of a cover letter for one position. Tomorrow, we hope to complete the first drafts of the other three positions and to submit at least one."
"Our session this evening demonstrated the student's growing ability to find and correct issues of sentence structure, paragraphing, and word choice. He has learned to identify and correct overuse of the passive voice and so improved the flow of his writing. We'll continue to work on these areas in future sessions."
"The student and I worked together on revising his paper and creating additional examples. Since the student was having difficulty getting his thoughts on paper, I had him compose verbally and dictate to me while I typed what he said. This strategy allowed him to maintain the flow of thought and get his ideas on paper. We were able to get more than half of a draft in this fashion. He still must add his in-text citations and two more sections with examples."
