Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For this session, we focused heavily on vocabulary, sentence completion, and writing mechanics. We started by defining and creating sentences for her assigned vocabulary words. Next, we did some of the test exercises provided in the study guide. We first started with vocab, which she did quickly. Next, we attempted the sentence completion exercises. After that, we discussed some writing mechanics, specifically grammar. I covered the parts of speech and went into depth on the difference between a subject and an object and how that applies to many words. We then concluded the session and I assigned her some test exercises for spelling and vocab in the practice book I provided some reading on how to improve her writing. She did much better overall with the vocabulary."
"Today the student and I worked on the math part of the placement exam. She's doing incredibly well in small doses -- she can do 10 questions in 10 minutes no problem. I don't believe the math is too complicated for her as when we work together, she gets it no problem. She just really needs to work on time management."
"Today the student and I spent time working through the reading and quantitative sections of the assessment test. We talked about different strategies for approaching the reading section, including reading the questions first, using your hand to guide your reading and increase your speed (a technique called "long-smooth underline"), and reading the questions carefully to ensure that you are looking for the right answer. We also focused on slowing down because I suspect that her weak practice test score was the result of panic about time. As I noted in our previous session, she doesn't need to answer all of the questions to get a good score - she simply needs to get a solid number of questions correct; therefore, she does not need to panic about time. After working through the reading section, we worked through the quantitative section, and already, I have seen improvement in her ability to translate word problems, set up problems correctly, and most importantly enjoy the mathematics work. She continues to struggle with the symbol questions, but I think that with some extra practice, she will feel much more comfortable about them on the test. For our next session, she is to memorize words, to rework the mathematics problems we reviewed, and to complete a new reading section. Overall, the session went very well!"
