"In this session, we mostly worked with inertia. We have started to work with a handout that was given by the student's teacher. Soon after she had completed the worksheet, the student was then given problems to solve. After explaining the material in a way that is understandable to the student, she left the tutoring session understanding the concepts much better."
"Great work tonight! We reviewed some pretty tricky material, especially the properties of solutions such as molarity. I told the student it can be very helpful to write out their units in full each time they are given a quantity (1.25 mol NaCl/L solution instead of 1.25 M NaCl). We also discussed types of solutions (acid, base, alcohol, etc.) and how to distinguish between them. OH(-) is hydroxide and is paired with cations with positive charge to make a strong acid. Alternatively OH(no charge) is a hydroxyl group and is paired with organic compounds containing carbon and hydrogen to create an alcohol. It's a small distinction but the student did an excellent job discerning between the two!"
"The student and I went over acid base chemistry and practiced drawing molecules and equations while identifying where bonds were broken and formed. We spent a lot of time reviewing which factors contribute to acidity. I left her with an acid - base study guide that I had created for her before the session. We also practiced drawing resonance structures of different molecules."
"Today the student and I began preparing for his next test. His next test will be covering subjects based on genetics, such as evolution, heredity in general, selection pressures, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and more. Today, we talked about a lot of the basics. The student seems to intuitively understand Punnett squares and their meaning. The practice problems we worked on seemed like they were easy for him. Next session we will continue to work on practice problems given to him by his Professor."
"We covered ecology. She was struggling the most with animal behaviors. She had a great attitude, and is just trying to keep everything straight. I told her most AP teachers have a pretty good sense of topics that are on the test. I think we will be able to work great together and I look forward to helping her."
"We covered photosynthesis from the localization of chloroplasts through carbon fixation and photorespiration. The student needed help with reading pathways and understanding the logic of the various systems. We began by emphasizing the connections between the various systems and how they fed into each other and established the overall photosynthetic equation. Then, as we moved through the slides, I made sure to properly build the foundations for photosynthesis and had her repeatedly explain it all back to me. I feel like we made a lot of progress and her grasp of the material has improved. Before next time, I asked her to review the material again and to practice drawing the cycles involved. We will be moving onto cellular respiration and the Krebs cycle if she feels comfortable enough."
