Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over a paper he is writing for Honor English. He is writing a criticism of Of Mice and Men. We mainly worked on structure and argument development. He was thinking of really good ideas. We just had to put them in the right format. He produced a solid outline. We finished the session going over common grammar mistakes he made in his rough draft. He will review the outline with his teacher on Monday."
"Today we reviewed the student's research paper on oceans. We also looked over one of her long-term creative writing projects."
"The student and I focused primarily on her large writing project during this session. We had worked on paragraph structure and sentence structure as well as writing style in our last session. The student had written about a page (front and back) and a half between sessions, and showed marked improvement in planning an overall essay. To help her in getting all of these facts and citations organized, I decided to have the student do another outline. We pulled the assignment sheet and all of her sources, and worked from her bibliography to list all of the facts and sources she could use in her paper. This week's homework is to write the outline with facts and to write 8 pages from that. Then we plan on her proofing the paper."
"We continued with our normal procedure - reading short stories and finding the moral/theme, using questioning. We also introduced a new graphic organizer that we'll work with more as time goes on to help differentiate between specific and abstract ideas."
"The student had spelling and math homework today. Once she focused on the problems, she got them right away. Every time we do spelling, she excels. Her teacher noted that the student was struggling with sentence dictation during her tests on this week's spelling list, so I wrote each sentence down and had her copy it, and then said the sentence aloud and had her write it. With more practice, which I will provide, she should be able to get a perfect score on her upcoming spelling test."
"The student finished reading her chapter book today. She has really caught on to recognizing many of the sight words we've been working on. We also played a game that focused on long vowel sounds in words such as -oo, -ai, -ea, and -oa. In addition, we continued to work on short vowel sounds as well. She was focused and engaged in the lesson."
