Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over math problems, especially word problems. We did some probability and some number theory problems. We ended the session with data interpretation and reading graphs."
"Today we covered a few more exponent rules/strategies and the ratio box strategy. We then reviewed some previous concepts, and went over test-day habits."
"We covered text completion, reading comprehension, proper analytical writing, and various geometry problems. I asked the student to do 20 minutes a day of geometry flashcards for when we meet again."
"The student and I did an intensive session on Analytical Writing and some wrap-up work on tips for the other sections and in-test stress management. Analytical Writing is the part of the GRE that makes the student most nervous, mostly the time aspect. We walked through several prompts together, talking about how to use the assumptions that connect the given evidence to the conclusion to help us strengthen and weaken arguments."
"We began by going over the student's assignment, the essay plans he wrote for 6 prompts (3 argument, 3 issues). His developing of arguments has improved, but he still must flesh out his points a bit more and get more flexible in coming up with three main points per essay. We talked about ways to construct the introduction and conclusion, particularly looking to the future in the conclusion. After that we went to vocabulary and I recorded every word he didn't know off the top of his head. For assignment, I will be giving him one math section, one verbal section and asking him to complete two essays (one of each type), as well as learn some vocab."
"We covered how to understand the question prompts and instructions of the analytical writing section. We also discussed how to locate the argument in various samples. We also practiced outlining answers to multiple examples, until we could find patterns. We timed the practice to know how long it took to consider time budgeting. We also practiced the verbal section, specifically the fill in the blank selections, practicing filling in the blanks with the answer choices covered up. We discussed study strategies to practice for the week while we are apart, including how to build up "test stamina" by reading online journal articles for 45 minutes at a time and take notes on them."
