Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

Chino, CA Essay Editing tutoring
Today the student spent some time working on her poster for science class on Newton's laws. Then she moved on to reading homework. First there was homework on concrete nouns, which she really seemed to understand. Then we reviewed some unit 4 vocab work. The studying she said she did over break definitely seemed to help, though a few words could still use some review. Finally we did an activity called Super Speed 1000, which involves practicing a lot of sight words, trying to get them faster and faster. Getting confident with sight words is a huge part of fluency, so I think we'll spend a few minutes every session playing this game, which also seemed fun and motivating for her.

Today the student worked on his outline for his controversial speech. We brainstormed ideas for attention getters, ways to establish credibility, and other things necessary for a good introduction. We also talked about the main points he will be highlighting in his speech. He will finish the outline, which is due Thursday, and his speech is next week. During our next session, we will review the outline and he will practice his speech.

We worked on the student's essay, which was a critique of a restaurant they recently went to. We went over the standard outline for a five-paragraph essay and reviewed some brainstorming that she did. We got through almost all of the essay; the main thing we focused on was eliminating unnecessary words and writing strong topic sentences.

The student had three math worksheets to get done today. She is continuing to practice her proficiency in adding "9" and remembered the technique I taught her. I timed her as she did her addition today, which helps her stay on task. She finished her worksheet in about a minute and 15 seconds with only one mistake. She is getting better with her word problems. She is actually reading them! If she doesn't understand a problem fully, she will ask for my help. This is something she didn't do before; she would simply rush through her work and hope it was right. She is applying more attention to detail both in spelling and math. Her spelling has improved! She got a B+ on her last spelling test. I am very proud of her improvement.

During our session today, I went over the math and English worksheets I had left with the student to work on. We went over the worksheets together for the first 15 minutes. She did well on all of them. After, I had her practice reading and writing different sight words. She has improved on recognizing most of the words we have been working on, however, still struggles a bit with a couple of them. I implemented different ways for her to memorize and learn the sight words she struggles with. Following that, I had her read for the last 20 minutes of the session. Her reading pace has improved along with the number of words she reads per minute. I will continue working with her where she needs the most help.

The student was very eager to read to me at this session and had picked several of her personal books that we had read before. As she read, I compared her fluency to past readings of the books and noticed immediately how fluid her reading has become and how she sounded out any words that were long or difficult to read. She has come so far with her reading fluency and vocabulary these past few months and it shows in her confidence and reading fluency. We then worked a rhyming puzzle I brought and finished off with her favorite Princess book: The Little Mermaid. I discussed her progress with her mother and she stated to my delight how the student had wanted to read on spring break, even at the beach! I am very pleased with her progress.
