Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did great this week! Her writing assignment wasn't perfect, but she stayed on task and ultimately succeeded. We continue to work on reading comprehension and test-taking skills."
"This was my first session with the student. We talked about school and what subjects he liked (math, science). Then we discussed English-- what his class has covered, what they're working on now, and how his writing assignments have been. I looked over one graded essay to get a sense of his work. They are currently working on debates in class and he will deliver a four minute speech on gun control next week. We created an outline to organize his thoughts and notes so far and then we tried another exercise for essay organization. I had him pick a favorite something (movie, book, food, sport) and he picked soccer. We worked on creating an outline for a persuasive five-paragraph essay on why soccer is the best sport. Once we had an outline, he saw how much easier it would be to write the actual essay."
"The student and I began his session by doing a reading passage with questions from last years released test. While reading, he annotated the passage by writing text codes, underlining, and circling key words. He also made note of important details beside the passage. The student did a great job reasoning through the corresponding questions- we discussed the meaning of the word "plot" by drawing a roller coaster metaphor for problem and solution. After the practice passage, the student worked on a page out of a 4th grade workbook related to adding interesting details to your writing. He did great- we will continue to work on reading comprehension and writing by using practice questions next time. The student and I began his session by reading through a chapter book. He practiced the same skills as last week- pausing for punctuation and comprehension, as well as slowing his pace. I gave him a personal writing prompt and he wrote about a time when he felt excited. Our focus for the writing passage was using the Writers Checklist from the last session and working to include a beginning, middle, and end in his writing. He was independently editing his work for the first items on the checklist, so we added an item regarding putting interesting details in your writing. Next time we will go through practice reading assessments so he can build his stamina for carefully working through assessments."
