Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started the session with a "ting xie" (quiz) of last session's characters. I said the characters in Chinese and the student wrote down what she knew. From now on, our quizzes will be in this format. Today's session covered chapters 2 and 3 from the same textbook as last time. Her spoken Chinese has gotten better from last time (she does a better job at distinguishing between the different tones). One thing that she could work on is writing the characters better and more proportional to how they should look. I left her with Ch 2 and 3 exercises and writing out the characters from these two chapters for homework."
"In this session, the student and I worked on pronunciations from the workbook for the first 30 minutes of class -- seeing the letters each week has been helping her with accuracy and fluency, and she has been improving. I always try to refer back to things covered in previous lessons and with her previous tutor to make sure that she is always keeping information learned in the past in mind. I spent the most time on the "zhi," chi," and "shi" sounds because they are not commonly spoken in English, and I want her to familiar with the way she needs to position her mouth in order to get the pronunciation correct. We spent the second half of the lesson creating flashcards for some of her favorite foods, which she seemed to really enjoy. I would like for her to practice working with them this week because I will be quizzing her on them next week!"
"We covered a variety of topics today: the numbers 1-8, the colors red green and orange, basic greetings, animals, objects, nouns and body parts. We watched a video about colors and sang songs about basic greetings and numbers and colors."
