This morning I found an interesting article in the New York Times about Ikea's attempt to improve the design quality of its products. Since the student is interested in interior design, I thought it would be fun to read together and provide a different take on language comprehension, vocabulary, and pronunciation. She enjoyed the article and we were able to focus on several words, phrases, and colloquialisms that she didn't know. We were also able to use this article to practice longer and more complicated words and sound patterns that we normally don't address in our sessions. During the week, she will read the entire article, and we will continue working with that and her sentences on Friday.

This morning, he and I read another assignment, reading "Cornerstone" by Alexander H. Stephens for his Civil War history class. Upon finishing that reading, we switched gears to his Latin American history class and read Chapter 7 of "No Higher Law" by Brian Loveman. We are still well ahead in reading and are still awaiting to hear the format of the Civil War mid-term. The latter still is a few weeks away.

This session began by having the student reread a section of his book out loud. I had him reread because he was not able to clearly summarize the pages. He was not sure of a new character that had been introduced, and had trouble explaining the cause and effect situation that occurred in the story. As he read, I had him pause and retell what he had read. That way, he was able to piece the information together to get a deeper understanding of the passage. Consequently, it was much easier for him to write his summary. Next, I had him visualize a portion of the passage he read. He said he does not always visualize as he reads, and we discussed the importance of doing so. He described his visualization as his reading response. We ended the session by doing some Math homework. He expressed that he enjoyed doing factorization. I did help him by clarifying how to simplify an expression that contained exponents and multiplication.

This session covered basic Reading Comprehension using informational text. Vocabulary, compare & contrast, and analogies were specific skill areas covered. The student struggled with sight word pronunciation when reading aloud, and therefore struggled with comprehension of the overall text. The student often missed the main idea of each passage. He was engaged and enthusiastic throughout the session, although he did appear to lose some energy when asked to reread certain sentences. Strategies for reading included basic test taking strategies (read the question first). No extra practice was left with the student. He was able to master 7th grade passages at 100% comprehension. No concerns were noted.
