Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed probability theory using candies, and continued reviewing with the state prep guide."
"Continued work on summer math packet. Spent extra time focusing on converting fractions from mixed number to improper and vice versa."
"We continued in Geometry, covering quadrilaterals. We went over last week's problem set, which covered triangles, circles and angle hunting."
"We worked on some very tough equation manipulation in an effort to solidify the student's understanding. It's also over-preparation I think for the upcoming year, but I can't guarantee that because I'm not sure what his curriculum will cover. He conceptually understands most, but does need help on the distinction between subtraction and adding negative numbers (and it is a very subtle one). I think we addressed it in the last hour of the session, and I left him with around 36 problems of various types that incorporate that distinction."
"The student and I had a very productive final session together, reviewing mathematical concepts from this past year through practice problems. It has been a very enjoyable and rewarding year working with him and I sincerely wish him the best as he starts 6th grade."
"The student and I finished her math packet, and did a little bit of practice on test taking strategies. I think she is very comfortable with all of the questions that were in the packet, and we even completed all of the 'optional' questions which were a little more challenging! We started to go over strategies like process of elimination and estimating based on magnitude. For example, even if she is a little unsure of how to do a question, a good step is to look at the answers and just eliminate ones that don't make sense. If a question is asking about hundreds of dollars and only subtraction or addition is needed, she should eliminate answers that are way too large, such as in the thousands or millions. As a bonus, we learned about exponents which she had not encountered before but picked up very quickly. I think she is set to start the year off really strong!"
