Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has a test on text structure on Friday. Today we practiced identifying the different types of text structures in paragraphs and he also used the graphic organizers to identify information from the stories. He also practiced math word problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. He needs more practice with long division, so I left some homework problems for him to work on"
"I covered the homework for Monday and Tuesday. For social studies, we completed chapter 8 "Life During the War," by writing the definition and one example for each vocabulary word, drawing a line connecting each person to what that that person did, filling in word webs, and filling in the sequence chart. For math, we converted units to complete each equation, and completed each conversion table. For reading, we read "Calm Koalas," and answered the questions, filled in for the correct answer and wrote the spelling word that goes with each sentence."
"During yesterday's session, the student and I reviewed her language arts homework, which was an assignment related to evaluating "cause and effect" in both stories and history. She then completed her reading assignment for the day, and we looked at the book she is currently reading and talked about ways to uncover context in the story such as setting, character perspective, and other elements that are useful for understanding the text. We concluded our session by doing extra math practice in her extra credit math book, focusing on concepts that her Math teacher and I had emailed about."
"The student had Reading HW and Math practice for his upcoming exam. His reading HW covered synonyms and antonyms. We went over the HW and carefully went over the definitions of all the words on the page. Then, he chose the best answer based on our discussion. After reading, we moved on to math. He and I covered PEMDAS and I covered a few examples while testing him. He seems to grasp the idea. Next time, we will continue to cover math topics that will be on his upcoming exam."
"The student has three exams and quizzes on Friday - one for history, science, and math. I had her make a history outline to go over repeatedly in preparation for her exam. We also went over any other homework she had for class because it was important not to miss these. She did her English homework and her history homework with me as well. I assigned her a homework list and marked which ones were important and what should be done tomorrow. I notice that she is developing her own techniques of studying, even though she doesn't realize this, so I am currently supporting her efforts and suggesting other methods to her."
"The student has three regular tests and a PSAT test in the next couple days. We looked at his math, and this segued into the PSAT math. We did factoring problems in precalc, and luckily I covered some of this already with him, because some of the problems were complicated and he had some foundation in factoring and synthetic division to go in with. We found he should review basic trig functions for the PSAT, and possibly some log equations. We will continue to work on these."
