How can a tutor assist you in conquering Writing?

Learning spelling and punctuation are important enough, but students must advance beyond these basics to be proficient writers. Your child could not succeed in school or any other part of their life without writing, and understanding this skill is no simple task. Some take longer than others to do that. The ability to write could give your student the tool to succeed in classwork, and to express themselves in many ways. The "one-size fits all" of their teacher's lessons is not the only answer. Varsity Tutors could help you find a skilled, independent tutor near Chesapeake, VA, for your child, who can guide them on the path toward writing understanding. The tutor's help will guide your student on a path to the top of the class, and be prepared for a Virginia Standards of Learning and Testing exam.

An experienced writing tutor in Chesapeake can present your student with multiple teaching approaches, until they find the one that works best for them. Alternative teaching methods will target the exact concepts of concern in custom-tailored lessons. If clarity and style need work, your child's tutor can spend time there. The instructor can hone the ability to create a worthwhile introduction and conclusion, or focus on your child's descriptive writing, narrative writing, or active or passive voice. With tutoring, your student can also practice writing on topic and with explaining their key points. There's nothing the tutor can't cover, and assess, through various relevant exercises and materials.

Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Chesapeake, VA Writing tutoring
This was the first meeting with the student. I met with both parents and we discussed what academic help he needed. I helped him with his math (fractions) and writing. The writing consisted of writing about a conversation between two dolphins. We used baseball as our foundation and he wrote a good paragraph.

For this session, we continued our efforts at refining the student's paragraphs, focusing on finding/analyzing specific quotes that could pertain to her chosen themes within the essay. Secondly, we developed a working outline of her paper (which was due the next day) as well as a functional (if prototypical) thesis. Future sessions will focus on knitting the essay together into a cohesive, comprehensive whole.

During today's session, the student and I worked mainly on writing. He posted a sample of his writing. I did a quick read through and discovered that there was no punctuation within the sample. We did two activities for punctuation instead of correcting the sample immediately. We worked on activities with commas and apostrophes. While working on the commas activity, he and I discussed what a subordinate clause is and how it is used to add extra information to a sentence. With the apostrophes activity, we discussed how adding an "s" will show possession. After completing this, we went back to the writing sample and went through and corrected the capitalization. We discussed how important words should be capitalized. For the next session, I would like to work on more punctuation and writing skills.

Today, the student and I worked on drafting his PPT presentation that will take place tomorrow on whether or not cultural and core borrowings should be borrowed from dominant languages and placed in subordinate languages. In doing this, we practiced going from a 'They say' (concept definitions and others' arguments, including claims, reasons, and evidence) to a statement of the research question, to an 'I say,' with our own claims, reasons, and evidence. Finally, we finished with a concluding slide that recapped what he did and argued how his topic is applicable to larger contexts in the world. He is going to present tomorrow and inform me how it goes the next time we meet.

The student and I took another look at her paper analyzing a story by Roald Dahl. She made same great changes since our last session, and her paper is so much easier to follow. Again, we went over how to cut down on "fluff" in her writing (sentences/words that aren't needed). We also worked on how to be more creative with sentences so there is no repetition. I was happy to hear her say her teacher commented that she really liked her revised paper and that it has interesting ideas. Those ideas were always there, it was just a matter of her learning how to focus in on them and communicate them efficiently.

We went over the assignment and talked about how to best tackle it in different parts. The student's attitude was very positive; he enjoyed talking about the concepts and trying to simplify them. Strategies and study skills left with him included a detailed outline of his next steps and what he should try to have done by the next session (read the textbook sections on the domains selected to write about so that he can better understand them, re-watch the movie assigned and take additional notes on the character selected, apply the examples of the character to the selected domains, start the paper--without worrying about an introduction--either by writing about each domain separately or by discussing the character's behavior and providing examples of each domain). We are going to schedule two additional sessions to complete the assignment.
