During our tutoring session, the student and I reviewed a practice math subject exam she had taken previously. At the start of the session, she did not feel confident with her math abilities. We spent our time looking over her incorrect answers and working out the correct solutions together. By the end of the session she was slightly more comfortable with the test. The most effective strategy she can do now to improve her score is to take more practice exams. This will help her get familiar with the types of problems that are on the test. Additionally, she should familiarize herself with all the functions of her calculator.

The student is preparing to take her ACT and has taken it a number of times previously. She's been out of school for a year working and has decided to attend college to better her career options. We started working with math doing a short diagnostic. She has solid algebra skills and remembers how to work with equations. She remembers slope-intercept form of a line (y=mx+b) and the basics of coordinate geometry. Her math vocabulary is solid also. Since she needs to answer about 30/60 questions correctly to achieve the target score of 19 on the math, we will focus efforts on solidifying her algebra skills and improve basic geometry. Working with word problems will be important.

The student and I had a pretty good session today. He did well on his Math and English homework, only missing a few problems. He also did well on reading, but struggled through the natural science passage. We'll work on another one together next time to boost his confidence. We talked through English topics: possession, brevity, pronoun error, run-ons, and subject-verb agreement. We also worked through some Science passages together (p.194 #18-22, p. 328 #1-11) and did some medium level Math problems (p. 311 #31-40). He's going to print out his formula sheet tonight and have it ready to go for Wednesday!

We covered a wide range of concepts including probability and the law of sines, however the main focus was the laws of exponents and how to solve those types of equations. The student struggled most with subtracting exponents and remembering to keep the concepts of negatives and subtraction separate. We worked heavily in this area, and even coupled it with simplifying equations. A key strategy that I instructed the student on, was rewriting equations before attempting to solve. That way the student can see the math, but mentally processing. Student has questions available for extra practice and I feel that the student progressed nicely.
