Session Summaries by SAT Math Tutors

Chesapeake, VA SAT Math tutoring
Because of the student's busy schedule with exams this week we spent the whole session working through example grid-in problems over a variety of topics. Because she typically does VERY well in her math courses, I can entirely understand her frustration when things don't "click" as quickly with this SAT stuff. Her favorite question is "So how would I set this up?" and this time around I was a little more aggressive in pushing her to make the first moves, even if the whole process wasn't yet obvious. She should have some time before we meet Sunday and through the week to work on problems, so I'll be finding a bunch of problem sets she can work on in her free time at school and then we can tackle problem areas together.

Today we went over the student's SAT test results identifying areas the student needed to practice. This included algebra and geometry concepts. We also looked at her reading results and it indicated she needed to practice inferences, main ideas, and identifying arguments. We reviewed factoring quadratic equations and finding solution sets. I also assigned her to review and use flashcards for solution sets, systems of equations, exponential operations, ratios, graphing, parallel lines, and perpendicular lines. She was focused and did a great job today.

For today's session the student took a Practice SAT online. The non-calculator section is 20 questions long and takes 25 minutes. After he finished taking that section we reviewed all of the problems together, focusing mainly on the problems that he missed. The section in which he is allowed to use a calculator is 38 questions long and take 55 minutes. By the time he was finished with that section we were nearly out of time. We reviewed one particularly difficult question which involved change of base. He had an overall math score of 520. This is an improvement from his original 500, but not quite as high as we would like it to be. I believe that he will perform better than this in an official test setting. Tomorrow we will do an in-depth review of all the problems that he missed on the calculator section.

We went through 30 math questions from a SAT practice test. The student knew what to do with some of the questions, but needed help with linear equations, algebraic fractions, systems, quadratic equations, similar triangles, trigonometry, simplifying radicals, writing equations, absolute value equations, and literal equations. As we worked through the ones she didn't know how to do, I showed her some test-taking strategies. Some of the ones I explained to her included using a simpler example to understand a difficult problem, drawing a diagram, and plugging in answer choices. I also gave her notes on how to add fractions without using the LCD, simplify radicals, and use the three trig functions (sin, cos, and tan). We had a really good session! She worked really hard and asked some great questions!
