How can a tutor help you master the SAT?

The SAT is administered to 11th and 12th grade students at their high school. If your child is preparing to take the exam, it is important to understand what the test is about. The SAT is a standardized exam that is used as a part of the admissions process for many colleges and universities. It serves as a means of assessing the skills your child gained during their education and compares them to what the school requires of the students it accepts. Your child can score between 400 and 1600 on the three-hour test, which is composed of three required sections in math, critical reading, and writing and language. There is an additional optional essay that allows another 50 minutes to complete it. You could help your child prepare for the SAT, though you may be wondering where to begin. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors can get you in touch with tutors in Chesapeake, Virginia, who are skilled at helping students prepare for the SAT.

This session, we focused primarily on writing and grammar. There was a bit of rust, as the student and I hadn't met for a week. With him rounding into form in math and reading, I want to make sure that his grammar is up to snuff. It was a bit of an uphill battle, but I could see the progress. He powered through his initial frustrations, asking questions and showing a desire to improve. His instincts are good, so he only needs a little seasoning. Next session we begin the big push, working on timed exercises and testing under pressure.

Today the student and I went over the grammar and non-calculator math sections. He got two wrong in grammar and three wrong in math. Some of them were easily avoidable mistakes, and some were caused by a lack of knowledge in a particular subject. His ceiling is obviously a perfect score; my goal is to present him with every problem type and to identify the ones that he consistently gets wrong and drill him on them so that it's less likely to happen on the actual test.

We went over a math section in detail - specifically we discussed order of operations, simplifying functions, rules of exponents, processing word problems (remember to write equations as you go, draw figures as you go, etc.), and solving algebraic equations.

For this session we reviewed the writing and reading sections. I had originally wanted to make math a priority before even moving on to English, especially since the student is fairly confident with reading and writing. However, when she was reviewing for her AP Language exam, she felt that she got a lot of questions wrong for English, and she needed some reassurance in that area as well. We worked on a few practice passages, and once she got the hang of marking up these passages based on the questions she was being asked, things became much easier. She is getting at least 80-90% of the questions right when I do not time her. The best way to increase her reading speed and comprehension is to read recreationally.

We worked on a number of ACT problems, since the student has finished the SAT and will be completing the ACT mid June. He was able to solve the vast majority of the problems by himself and I believe that he is becoming more comfortable with the material (or maybe the ACT math questions may play to his strengths). Some problems were challenging, such as how to find the fourth point when a rectangle was plotted on a graph, but we were able to work through them and strategize a bit on how to solve the problems with the least amount of time and effort. I wrote a list of several of the things that he might find useful, such as the equation of a circle, parallel lines, divisibility by 3 and 6 rules, etc. We also talked a bit about how the SAT went, and it seemed as if he did pretty well. I think we have covered a lot of the major equations, theorems at this point and are just practicing more problems.
