How can a tutor assist you in conquering Chemistry?

What the heck is a mole? If you're in chemistry, you should probably know. Chemistry is an exciting topic - it could lead to explosions in the classroom and neon light shows in the test tube, but sometimes it can also be downright confusing. With unit conversions and equations to balance, chemistry can demand you pay attention to details and flex your algebra skills. At the same time, lab reports and exams can challenge your conceptual knowledge of laws and theories that rule all of chemistry. Whether you find yourself getting lost in the details or simply messing up the algebra, a chemistry tutor can try to help you get over the obstacles in your path to good grades in chemistry! Let the educational directors at Varsity Tutors help you find a tutor in Olathe who can guide you as you work to understand your chemistry course.

We covered a test review for an upcoming chemistry exam on gasses. I used the student's relative ability to solve the problems on the review in order to quantify understanding. We reviewed how to accurately extract information from a word problem and produce an algebraic expression from it. I left the student to finish the entirety of the review in preparation for his test.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Leah in Olathe, KS
Today was our first session. The student has a final tomorrow, so we went over major concepts that will be covered. We created several pages of summary notes to simplify these topics. We also went through the practice final exam given by her teacher, and I created some more practice problems based on the content of the practice exam. It was really great how focused she remained throughout the session!

Chemistry Tutoring review by Vivian in Olathe, KS
The student and I went over different types of bonds (ionic, covalent, metallic) and properties of covalent bonding (hydrogen bonding, polar, nonpolar) today. We also went over polar and non-polar molecules. We also finished three homework sheets, two of which were on about covalent bonds, and one on Lewis dot structure.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Matthew in Olathe, KS
Today we continued working on the old released assessment exam. I wanted to skip to the free response section because I have seen more students struggle to come up with their own answer in that section than picking a provided answer in the multiple choice section. I was fairly impressed with the students yesterday. They have shown much progress. We went over questions about Lewis dot diagrams, atomic structure, group 18 properties, electrons, ions, ionic radius, metallic bonding, molarity, freezing point depression, empirical formula, energy curves, organic functional groups, vapor pressure, intermolecular forces, voltaic cell, redox, combined gas law, catalysts, stoichiometry, sig figs, neutralization, titration formula, sublimation, heat flow, isotopes, and half life. The students answered many more questions correctly during this session. There were also a lot fewer instances in which they just looked at me blankly, not even knowing how to begin answering the question. The students are making progress.
