Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During today's session, we went over a few questions and topics to help the student prepare for her final tomorrow. She has a solid understanding of the material and was much more confident today than she was when she was studying for her last test. Over the last few weeks, she has grown tremendously in terms of her confidence, problem solving skills, and understanding of chemical concepts. I am so proud of her."
"The student and I covered many of the new topics she recently learned in class, mostly the ones where she did not understand what was being portrayed in her notes. This included Fischer esterification, transesterification, nucleophilic addition to the carbonyl (imine, oxime, hydrazine formation), the Wolff-Kishner reduction, reduction of thioacetals vs. the Clemmensen reduction and Wolff-Kishner, and finally, electrophilic aromatic substitution and nucleophilic aromatic substitution (addition/ elimination, elimination/ addition)."
"The student and I covered some general chemistry review as well going over functional groups. The student and I also discussed shorthand notation of common substituents and how to use them appropriately. Working with the student was very nice, she was very attentive and motivated during the lesson."
"The student and I covered stability of alcohols, acidity of alcohols, how they can function as a base, reduction/ oxidation of alcohols, and how to combine steps to form a synthesis path using alcohols. She needed help with converting simple diagrams to applied questions. She does have a desire to improve. I helped her plan out future study patterns that work well with organic chemistry, such as how to format flash cards, and how to organize notes to maximize her efficiency of studying. I left her with an online source that built upon what I had covered in the session."
"The student and I covered the very basics of Organic Chemistry I, such as structures, bonding, and resonance. She did not struggle with any concepts or material. She seems to learn quickly and understand the material efficiently."
"The student and I discussed determining polarity of compounds and how that affects the solubility as well as boiling points. We also looked at resonance structures, formal charges, drawing Lewis Structures. We looked at functional groups as well. I left her with some extra practice problems to reinforce what we went over and to help her prepare for her 1st exam."
