Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was a really good session with the student! He did forget his homework, so instead we focused on a review of division and an introduction to double digit division. The student didn't have any issues with the single division, but double digit division was a little newer to him, so we broke down the problems as much as possible for practice. I think he does need some more practice with double digit division, but I am not worried as he hasn't quite gotten there in school yet so there's definitely time to work on it! For our next session, we'll review what he's learned so far in class to see if there are any questions, and then we'll practice some more double digit division."
"Today we covered rounding, division, and multiplication. The student was struggling the most with rounding, but the more we worked at it the better she got. I showed her a few ways to work through the problems, and she seemed to catch on fairly quickly. She is a very smart young lady, and I think that she will benefit greatly from these sessions."
"Today we discussed changes to plans as we go into the school year. We started out with an online resource, and then worked on reviewing some of the work he did over the last week and a half. He had some troubles with dividing by decimals. He has some practice to do for that. We also worked on revising his essay. We discussed following his structure for a paragraph. He missed some sentences in typing up his essay, as well as needing to add some more content. We will be working on some revising and then moving onto editing next week, if we have time. The essay and worksheets provided to me will be only supplemental to work given by his teacher. Our plan going forward is to work on math, and then review any work he received for the week, reviewing concepts and checking for understanding."
"Today we discussed solving word problems - extracting and interpreting information. Order of operations, operations using fractions, exponents, roots, fractional exponents, and how they relate. I guided the student through her homework and gave additional practice. I worked with her on methods of checking to her catch her own errors. Looking at alternate approaches to problems because she was advancing rapidly through our session."
"Today we discussed what concepts the student has covered in his math class this year and what concepts he is currently working on. I asked him what concepts he finds easy and what concepts he has struggled with. We then reviewed a few problems from his most recent math test that he had struggled with. He seemed generally to be very competent with the material. He struggled a little with rounding numbers, which we will continue to review next time. Otherwise, his comprehension and computational skills seem excellent. I noticed, however, that he is often overeager to complete a problem and get it over with, which can lead to some oversights on his part. I plan to give him a diagnostic test before our next session to more thoroughly evaluate his skill levels."
"Today we focused on math and worked on addition and subtraction of 2 and 3 digit numbers with regrouping. We reviewed the steps with mixed problems with 2 digit numbers. I had the student explain her thinking and tell me why she had to regroup. She did a great job with her work today."
