Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We practiced sketching curves by identifying critical points, regions of increasing and decreasing, maximum and minimum values, inflection points, and areas of concave up and down. We also reviewed how to evaluate, take derivatives of, and find limits of sinh, cosh, and tanh."
"We reviewed all the sections that she has learned so far so that she can prepare for her test tomorrow. First we went over how to derive simple functions. Then we moved on to the quotient and product rules for derivatives. After that we did a few practice problems on finding the tangent line of polynomials. At the end of the session we reviewed average rate of change."
"We reviewed infinite limits before starting the unit 2 exam. We went over how infinite limits are related to horizontal asymptotes, and then went through the assignment on finding limits approaching positive and negative infinity, respectively. She understood how dividing by infinity yields a number very close to zero, and I asked her to take notes of the three conditions when finding horizontal asymptotes. We'll continue working on the unit exam and move into the next unit."
"We reviewed position and velocity functions before continuing on to practiced the chain rule and implicit differentiation. We went through how to use the chain rule to find the derivative of composite functions that we don't know the formula for but have a table of values or a graph. We looked at how the derivative of a graph is the slope. We looked at some of the different notations for derivatives including the dy/dx and prime notations for higher order derivatives. Lastly, we looked at a related rates problem and went through the different steps to solve it including how to use implicit differentiation to get the rates of change. The student is doing better using the chain rule and implicit differentiation. She wasn't feeling as confident about her most recent quiz on velocity, so I left her a couple pages of practice problems for velocity including some questions about how to interpret certain words in a velocity word problem."
"We reviewed SAT math concepts and questions. We went over past sample problems and tried to identity topics that the student had a hard time with. We also looked at equations and formulas that he needs to know. We went over the SAT practice exam questions and I assigned him to finish the ones that we did not get to. He was engaged and attentive during the session."
"We reviewed the first chapter and prepared for the exam. We covered an Exam review the professor made and also discussed other practice problems. One note I want to make for next tutoring session is to study more for the exam before the tutoring so that in the tutoring we can cover the doubts. On Sunday we basically went over the entire review, and I am positive that we can get better test scores by setting up a study schedule that favors review and clearing doubts more than going through the whole material. I think if we can establish this going forward, we will see better test scores and more fluid tutoring sessions."
