Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we worked on fractions using circle faction tiles. The student was able to use the hands-on tool to find different ways to make half. He found ways such as 3/6, 4/8, and also others. There were some that were a tiny bit more than half while others were right on. We checked the work by solving addition fraction problems by finding a common denominator."
"The student and I reviewed derivatives, related rates, and graphing for his group quiz on Monday. He remembers how to do most of the problems, but he has trouble approaching problems testing the same concept but asked in a different way. He is good at memorizing but needs a bit of help analyzing problems. I'm trying to reinforce the fundamental concepts by repeating them, and encouraging him to shy away from formulaic problem solving. I gave him extra related rates problems to practice before his quiz."
"Today we worked on the techniques of taking derivatives: product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule. We used these on some applications in physics: finding velocity, speed, and acceleration with the position function given. Then we did analysis such as finding the highest point the projectile reached. We also analyzed the graphs of velocity, speed, and acceleration with the position function given. We ended the session by finding marginal cost and revenue and analyzing their meaning--which is closely related to derivatives. The student did a very good job."
"The student was beginning his work on geometric proofs of congruence. A principal challenge was understanding why we distinguish between congruence and equality, and why we call out such intuitive concepts as the reflexive principle of equality and congruence. Once he got the gist of why we work with these quantities in this way, he was able to work on problems solving them very smoothly."
"We worked on geometry proofs. The focus was on parallel and intersecting lines and congruent angles. This was the most attentive this student has been. When I commented on this, his mom said he was on a new medication. The student worked well and completed his homework."
"Today I met with the student for the first time. She is in Pre Algebra and just had her first test last week. I helped with her test corrections and answered questions she had on the past unit."
