Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started our first session by talking about the class the student will be starting in a few weeks as well as his experiences in previous math courses. He said how he understands the homework, but he feels as though they never covered this material on the test. I explained how a useful study technique to try is to take notes directly from the textbook to supplement his notes from class. This way he can have all of the vocabulary and equations in one place. I noted how he may feel like he knows how to solve all of the problems from the book because he was able to do the homework, but it's another thing entirely to be able to do the same problems a day or a week later when the material is not as fresh in his mind. This may be why he struggles with tests. I emphasized how important practice is and showed him the tutoring website where he can find practice problems to work on before he gets his textbook. We spent the majority of the time going through these problems."
"The student & I continued to study sequences. However, since his last exam already passed I also introduced him to some key concepts such as derivatives, integration, product rule, quotient rule, & chain rule. He is going to see such topics moving forward in calculus. He caught on very quickly. I left him a note sheet he can refer to whenever he starts his next math class."
"Today I had my first session with the student. He seems pretty intelligent and up to speed. His pre-calculus course is very advanced. They are covering topics from calculus 1 at this point. Today we went over some questions of derivatives, antiderivatives, tangent slopes, and normal slopes. He seems to understand the material pretty well. His only weaknesses I was able to spot were that he makes simple arithmetic mistakes occasionally, and (like a lot of students in Calculus) sometimes derives instead of integrating and vice versa. Overall I see him doing well in this course. When I show him his mistakes, he is easily able to understand them right away. Today was a great session. I also mentioned to him that I would like him to send me a schedule of his test dates and assignment due dates for the next couple weeks. Our next session is next Sunday."
"Yesterday we reviewed the homework for four chemistry chapters. We have also worked on a review of three different quizzes. The session was fairly productive. The student has shown engagement in the session."
"I covered several topics with the student, including arithmetic and geometric series, conic sections, and finding the derivatives and antiderivatives of polynomials and rational expressions. The student caught on very quickly and the session went very well. I recommend that she review our notes in preparation for her next class."
"We started our session by going over trig functions and graphing them using amplitude, period, and horizontal shift. We also reviewed how to change degrees into radians. The last part of our session we worked on Physics. The student is taking a physics test on Ohm's law. We reviewed parallel and series and combination of circuits. He became confident, especially in calculating equivalent resistance of challenging circuit combinations."
