Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over the next chapter on implicit differentiation and related rates; the student picked it up quickly!"
"We reviewed the power, product, and quotient rules in preparation for the student's test on Friday. We also discussed the relationships of tangent lines, derivatives, and graphs to develop a better graphical understanding of derivative principles. I have no doubt that she will do well on her test."
"The student and I discussed definition of a derivative, derivative of a function, power rule, product rule, quotient rule and how to derive the equation of a line tangent to a function at a point."
"We discussed the basic "rules" for differentiation: the product rule, the quotient rule, and the chain rule, and looked at a number of examples of each in action. We worked through the informal "proof" of the quotient rule to see why it has its specific form, and we also spent time looking at how the derivatives of trig functions can be found using only sine, cosine, and the quotient rule. We worked an example chain rule problem where a cleverly chosen "inner" function simplified the problem significantly. We also looked at a lengthy chain rule problem, stacking multiple "inner" functions and briefly discussed the derivatives of the natural logarithm and exponential functions. The student had no difficulty following the material, and it was clear that she was becoming much more comfortable with the "rules" by the end of the session."
"We reviewed material for the student's test that we have gone over from previous sessions. His confidence has gone. He is able to tackle the problems and manipulate and plug functions properly into equations."
"We went over more examples of the chain-rule. The student's homework entirely consisted of these types of problems, and we were able to cover all questions on it. I also gave her advice on test-taking strategies."
