The student had a couple of assignments on derivatives, so we worked through them. For the first set of problems, he was supposed to find the derivatives according to the limit definition. After I explained the formula and where it comes from (basically the slope formula), he didn't have much trouble. For the next assignment, he had to find derivatives using the derivative rules (shortcuts), which he remembered how to do pretty well. He says he has a test next Friday, so we'll review for it next week.

He explained that he has spent several years away from math, and needs some extra help parsing it at the college level, so we've decided to meet three times per week. For the second half of the session, we worked through problems relating to the first chapter of material to prepare him for a quiz to be taken the next day.
